Abstract

The article is devoted to the emergence of economic education in the Far East Its foundation was laid by the Oriental Institute (Vladivostok, 1899–1920) where great attention was paid to teaching economic disciplines and economic research by professors and students. In November
1918, training of economists began at the Faculty of Economics of the Vladivostok Higher Polytechnic College (since 1919 – the Polytechnic Institute), and with the opening of the State Far Eastern University (Vladivostok, April 1920) was transferred there, to the Faculty of Social Sci-
ences. The authors trace the continuity of the content of economic education when teachers of economic disciplines, moving to another educational institution, continued to give previous lecture courses. The article reveals some regional features of economic education, such as teaching,  along  with  economic  disciplines,  oriental  languages,  geography  and  politics  of  the  Asia-Pacific countries. In the 1920s, the Far East featured two Russian centers of higher education. Beside Vladivostok there was another city with educational institutions, Harbin (China), where economic specialization was available at the Higher Economics and Law Courses (since March 1, 1920), the Law Faculty since 1922. The article provides brief biographical information about the first lecturers and professors of economic disciplines, listing the courses that they taught. The article was written using materials from foreign archives and libraries. Its relevance is due to new requirements that are currently being presented to the education of economic specialists at Russian universities.
